5 Most Beautiful Places in Quebec to Go Stargazing

It is difficult to appreciate the beauty of the night sky in the city or even in the suburbs, because of the high levels of light pollution. The stars are harder to see and those that are visible are very faint.

If you want to contemplate the stars free from the interference of streetlamps or the light emanating from houses or commercial buildings, you will have to travel away from the major urban centres. Arm yourself with warm blankets, camping gear and folding chairs, and head to one of these ideal stargazing spots.

1— From a Tent in the Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier

As quiet as it is enchanting, this little known park is located in Stoneham-et-Tewkesbury, about 30 minutes from Quebec City. All you need for a magical night is a tent and a warm fire. The next day, there are all kinds of seasonal outdoor activities to pick from, from snowshoeing to mini-rafting.

2— In a Yurt in Mont-Tremblant

Mont-Tremblant National Park is spectacular. Its fauna, flora and immensity make it a unique environment. You can rent a cabin or a camp site, but if you want to spend the night looking up at the stars all snug and warm, there’s nothing better than a yurt thanks to the skylight in the centre of its roof. Get a cozy fire going in the stove and wonder at the constellations and planets until you fall asleep.

3— At the Saint-Zénon Observatory

Do you want to see the Milky Way in all its glory using sophisticated instruments? Then visit one of Quebec’s astronomical observatories! The one in the municipality of Saint-Zénon in Lanaudière – perched on the top of a mountain – is worth a visit. An interpreter is available, and participants can even bring their own telescope.

4— Alongside the Aurora Borealis at Saint-Michel-de-Bellechasse

There are places in Quebec where you can see dazzling northern lights … and you don’t need to go that far north! For example, the Saint-Michel-de-Bellechasse marina in the Chaudière-Appalaches is known for its colourful nighttime shows. There are periods in the year when the aurora borealis are more active and therefore more spectacular. Find out when they are at their best before you plan your trip!

5— Stargazing By Sleeping Beneath the Stars in the Poisson Blanc Regional Park

The Laurentides is the home of the breathtaking landscapes of the Poisson Blanc regional park. You can stay in a tiny house in the forest or pitch your tent on one of the camping sites. But here the most adventurous can sleep directly beneath the stars! Perfect for observing the nightly heavens. During the day, use this occasion to visit the numerous designated picnic sites on the many islands of the reservoir. It’s like stepping onto an undiscovered continent!

Our Belle Province is full of natural hideaways where one can marvel at the limitlessness and beauty of our skies. Whether as a family trip or a lovers’ getaway, you owe it to yourself to go stargazing in the wild at least once in your lifetime!
